Ways to Make Money on the Side

Why do so many people look for ways to make money on the side? A typical reason would be to improve one’s standard of living. Many people also need extra money just to pay their bills. Others want to sock away money for a vacation, a new car, or a down payment on a house.

If you’re living from paycheck to paycheck, then making money on the side can provide you with extra cash to catch up on bills, accumulate money in the bank, update your wardrobe, create a college fund for your kids, take courses to advance your own career, and have some additional money on hand for occasional luxuries.

Extra money also comes in handy for gift-giving purposes. Everyone needs money for holiday gifts, birthdays, anniversaries, wedding gifts, graduation gifts, and so on. Also: If you have kids, outstanding student loans, or expensive hobbies, then there always seems to be a need for more cash flow!

Is a Side Hustle Always Feasible?

For those who already work 60-80 hours a week at a demanding job or self-employed business, you may not have the time or energy to pursue a “side hustle.” However, if you have weekends, evenings, holidays, and even early mornings (yawn) available, then earning money on the side can often be a realistic goal.

Granted, everyone needs time for rest and relaxation, but if you can find part-time gigs that fit into your schedule — especially from the comfort of your home (teaching online*, for example) — then opportunities exist to bump up your income. If you’re fortunate enough to be able to make extra money doing something you enjoy, then there’s much less of a chance you’ll end the week feeling drained, frazzled, or overwhelmed.

One of the biggest challenges for people pursuing part-time work, work-at-home opportunities, or freelance gigs is maintaining a balance in their lives. Since everyone’s schedules, energy levels, and family responsibilities are different, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to making extra money on the side. Each person has to decide for themselves.
